1962 Beverley

Dim memory of what must have been year 6 ..... I can remember the terror of not being allowed to stay in the classroom during recess and lunch .... of having to go out into the playground and then be vulnerable to the senior boys.

It must have been in this year that it was bullied as retaliation for Dad's work is traffic inspector.  There were probably only a few sessions but they terrified me and for the rest of my school life at Beverly, I was in constant terror.  I remember bullying sessions in the playground, in the toilet block .... I had to walk home and I was always scared that they would get me during the walk.

During this year and the next, I worked as a paper boy .... Up at 5am, meet at the shop, roll 130 papers, load them into a large bag that was then balanced on the cross bar of my bike.  I then had to ride my round and throw the papers into the house yards as I rode past.  I think I finished at around 7:30am.  The pay was about 15 shillings ... $1.50! per week.
